UC3833J is a high-precision low dropout linear regulator controller developed for building high-reliability discrete linear power supply systems, belonging to classic power management semiconductor devices for analog power conversion scenarios. Adopting 8-pin ceramic dual in-line CDIP through-hole packaging, this component is tailored for wave soldering assembly processes, with excellent anti-interference performance and stable mechanical structure, widely applicable to traditional plug-in circuit boards that require long-term continuous operation.
The device supports an ultra-wide DC input voltage span from 4.5V up to 36V, compatible with various common DC bus power rails in industrial equipment, experimental power sources and peripheral control systems. Built-in trimmed 2V bandgap voltage reference achieves tight accuracy within ±1%, paired with an integrated high-gain error amplifier to realize precise closed-loop voltage regulation. Designers can configure output voltage arbitrarily via external resistor divider networks to match diversified power supply demands of analog circuits, sensors and control modules.
Its most distinctive core feature is the innovative programmable duty ratio current limiting mechanism. Once the load current exceeds the preset threshold, the internal gated astable timer will be triggered to periodically switch the external power pass transistor on and off according to customized duty cycle parameters. This design retains sufficient peak current capacity to cope with instantaneous large current startup loads, meanwhile greatly reducing average power consumption of power devices under short-circuit faults, eliminating the need for bulky additional heat sinks and optimizing overall system volume and cost. Grounding the timer pin can disable the timing function, switching the chip to constant voltage and constant current dual regulation mode flexibly.
Equipped with bidirectional high-current drive ports supporting both current sourcing and sinking, the controller can flexibly drive external NPN or PNP power transistors without complicated peripheral circuit adaptation, facilitating engineers to build high-current linear power supplies according to current and heat dissipation requirements. The internal quiescent supply current is controlled at 9.5mA under normal operation, balancing dynamic response speed and standby power loss reasonably.
Comprehensive multi-layer safety protection circuits are fully integrated inside the chip. Under-voltage lockout (UVLO) function keeps the regulator shut down when input voltage is insufficient to avoid unstable output caused by undervoltage power supply; thermal shutdown circuitry automatically cuts off drive output once internal junction temperature exceeds safe limits to prevent permanent burnout from overheating. Accurate current detection circuit also provides reliable short-circuit and overload protection for post-stage loads.
Classified as commercial grade specification, UC3833J stably works within the temperature range of 0℃ to 70℃, suitable for indoor fixed equipment operating environments. Ceramic packaging delivers superior temperature stability and vibration resistance compared with plastic packages, making it a preferred choice for laboratory bench power supplies, test measurement equipment, communication device auxiliary power modules and traditional industrial control power circuits. Though not compliant with RoHS environmental standards, it still occupies an important position in maintenance replacement and classic equipment upgrading scenarios relying on through-hole components.
